Current Work

My paintings explore interior landscapes - the unseen terrains through which we experience, interpret, and remain connected to life. I am interested in presence: the presence of the painter, the presence of the viewer, and the painting as a meeting point between inner worlds.

Using landscape as a visual language, I work intuitively to reflect lived experience from the inside - its complexity, vulnerability, and ongoingness. Foregrounds are often dense and textured, shaped by what is known and endured, while distant spaces open toward light, possibility, and what remains unresolved. Doors, windows, and thresholds recur as points of recognition and choice, suggesting moments of engagement that may invite, but never demand, entry.

Rather than offering escape, the work seeks to stay with what is - holding both difficulty and hope without resolving either. I am drawn to light not as solution, but as illumination: something that reveals, draws attention, and allows meaning to be seen.

I hope the paintings offer a place of recognition, where viewers feel met, and leave feeling steadier, braver, and more awake to their own interior lives.

I started this body of work in 2018 and though the work has developed and changed, the focus remains the same.

Florals and painting from life

Works from a series developed between 2020–2023 exploring energy and fragility in response to the pandemic. I wanted to capture the contrasting sense of power that life has within very fragile vessels. I chose flowers as my subject because it meant I could paint from life and experience the fragility - wilting and death - first hand as well as a sense of power being trapped and misunderstood.

Over time these pieces developed significantly as I found more freedom in my work.

Portraiture

From 2017-2019 I studied portraiture at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art. Here are some examples of work that I produced during that time.

Painting Malcolm was a great joy to me. He was a retired architect, gentle and kind. I wanted to depict his warmth and joy.

“Madonna”

This piece was painted over three weeks and the model pregnant, proving an interesting challenge as her body grew and changed as she sat.

In this piece there are three self portraits surrounded by members of my class at Heatherley’s. Each portrait is painted in a short 20 minute sitting as we each sat for one another, with the composition being built up with each sitting.

Considering darkness and light, the face emerges from the loose soft marks that make up the ground. I enjoy the combining of more worked areas and looser areas that leave the viewer to interpret what they see.
